When my brother graduated from high school, my parents allowed me to accompany him and his roommate on their graduation trip to Europe. I was very fortunate for the opportunity and it was a trip I will never forget.

After starting in Amsterdam we flew to Barcelona, Spain for the final stage of our trip. We truly enjoyed our time in Barcelona. Having studied Spanish in both high school and college, it was fun for me to put my language skills to the test as we walked the streets.

I loved that the city was nestled between the mountains and the sea. We usually spent our mornings on the beach and our afternoons exploring the furthest areas of the city. The city was very clean and we liked that every street was lined with trees. As we walked, we constantly saw advertisements for their world famous soccer team, FC Barcelona. Unfortunately they did not have a match while we were visiting, but it gives me another reason to return to the city in the future.

My brother and I marveled at the architectural work of Antoni Gaudí. Gaudí had a significant impact on the development of Barcelona, but none of his creations were as magnificent as la Sagrada Família.

La Sagrada Família is a large Roman Catholic Church in the middle of the city. The church has a very gothic style and is unlike anything I have ever seen. Construction on the church began in 1882 and continues today. The church’s development has been delayed over time for a number of reasons: Gaudí’s death in 1926, the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s, and funding has consistently been subject to the volatile flow of private donations. The estimated completion date for la Sagrada Família is set for 2026, the centenary of Antoni Gaudí’s death.

Overall, the people were very friendly, the weather was great, and the nightlife was very fun. My brother and I really enjoyed our time in Barcelona and I highly recommend this as a city to visit!
